Choosing the Perfect Sea Fishing Rods: 5 Essential Tips
By Lori Rocha | October 26, 2009
Even with a top of the line fish locator, you won’t catch many fish without a decent rod. Here are some tips from Lori on choosing the best sea rod:
Are you currently researching the bewildering range of available sea fishing rods? I know as well as most how complicated and confusing it can be!
Don’t worry, help is at hand. Bear the following simple points in mind and you’ll be enjoying sea fishing success in no time!
Here are 5 essential things to consider while researching to buy sea fishing rods:
1. Consider where you will fish.
Will you be mostly fishing from the ocean shore? Or will you primarily be deep sea fishing?
Think about this carefully. Your fishing destination determines the types of fish you intend to catch and the techniques you’ll use.
If you’ve only fished in freshwater before now, you’ll certainly need a stronger rod for sea fishing. Sea fish such as marlin and shark are stronger than fish that live in rivers, lakes, or even estuaries.
The type of fish you intend to catch should inform the decision about the type of rod you buy.
2. What should the rod be made of?
Graphite or fibreglass are generally good choices for sea fishing rods.
Both graphite and fiberglass are strong enough for sea fishing but also light enough to handle for long periods of time. They aren’t prone to rusting in salt water like other metals.
Graphite isn’t very flexible but it is strong and relatively light.
You’ll find that the length, width and general density of sea fishing rods made from graphite is different from other types of graphite rods.
Another excellent material for sea fishing rods is fiberglass. In fact, many prefer it to graphite as it bends more easily, which makes landing large fish easier.
The only compromise with fiberglass rods is that they generally don’t last as long as graphite. For me, that’s an acceptable compromise. My personal favorites are fiberglass rods.
3. Consider the tackle you’re going to use with your rod.
Like all fishing rods, sea fishing rods are useless without decent tackle. The best kind of tackle depends on the kind of rod you intend to use.
As with the choice of rod, the choice of tackle is very much dependent on the type of catch you’re going for and where you intend fish.
4. What techniques will you use?
Not all fish and fish habitats require the same fishing techniques.
It’s vital to carefully consider the types of fishing technique you’ll be employing when sea fishing, when choosing your next sea fishing rod.
5. Research, research, research.
The vast array of styles, brands, materials and accessories available for sea fishing rods is staggering.
When looking into buying a new fishing rod, of any kind, research is of the utmost importance.
Use the internet to browse the available range. Check out online fishing stores to find out what you can get for your budget.
Buy magazines and read the advice and reviews. I spotted 4 magazines dedicated to sea fishing in my local store alone yesterday.
And, if you have the chance, talk to experienced fishermen (or women). You’ll receive no better advice than from people who are experts with sea fishing rods.
Make sure you’re informed and bear these tips in mind when making a choice.
Enjoy your research and enjoy fishing!
